First Year Experience
MCNY recognizes the importance of strengthening the student connection to the College and laying the foundation for student success during the first year. We are here to help our newest undergraduates, both freshmen and transfer students, transition into the intellectual, social, and cultural community of MCNY. We do this through integrated offerings of curricular and co-curricular opportunities that assist new students in making a successful transition to the unique MCNY community of learners throughout the first year.
The First Year Experience connects students to the people, programs and resources necessary to provide a strong foundation for academic success and personal growth. The First Year Experience responds to a common institutional purpose: providing a "superior, experientially-based education that fosters personal and professional development, promotes social justice, and encourages positive change in workplaces and communities."
The Office of Student Services First Year Experience efforts include developing and implementing programs that will promote success for students in this transitional period. These include Student Orientation, college skills workshops, strategies for identifying and assisting academically at risk students, enhancing communications with Purpose 1 and 2 instructors, and overseeing the delivery of departmental services as they relate to new students.
Student Orientation is held at the beginning of each semester. It familiarizes incoming students with our programs and the Purpose Centered Education Model that is so unique to our College. It’s a great opportunity to meet representatives from each office within the College and have them explain the resources available. At this Orientation, all registered students will be issued a MCNY Student ID Card. In addition, you will enjoy workshops, financial aid information, and fun activities with our staff.
College Skills Workshops
College skills workshops are held each month to assist students in the development of their essential college skills. College skills workshops include time/stress management, study skills, basic grammar skills, and critical thinking skills. Come visit the Office of Student Services, or check our bulletin board for workshop dates.
In addition, our Learning Enhancement Center offers comprehensive academic support, in the form of one-on-one and online tutoring, to help MCNY students develop their writing, math and other skills.
