About this Program
New accelerated 12-Month Initial Teacher Certification
Master of Science in Education (Childhood 1-6) Program.
This 1-year, 3-semester, 48-credit program is designed
for the person who is committed to the educability of all
children in diverse urban and suburban schools and has the
intellectual capacity, preparation and motivation to pursue
an intensive schedule of study and practice. The program
leads to initial teacher certification in Education (Childhood
1-6) upon graduation and successfully completing NYSED requirements,
including passing grades on certifying exams.
The unique interdisciplinary course of study integrates the College's Purpose-Centered System of Education that links theory to practice at each stage of the learning process. Through a cohort model, students are organized into peer learning communities to develop knowledge, skills and understanding aligned to the New York State Teaching Standards. Because the program is committed to preparing teachers who are able to use educational technology, students will be given their own laptop computer to help them explore, evaluate and effectively integrate instructional technologies throughout the curriculum.
The MS in Education program is designed for recent college
graduates, career changers and uncertified teachers. This
12-month program is for full-time students only. Students
can begin in the fall, spring or summer semester. Students
are expected to complete the entire program in 12 consecutive
months with their entering cohort class. In compliance with
NYSED regulations, the program consists of 8 hours a week
of field experiences during the first semester. During
the second and third semesters, students will participate
in two student teaching experiences each lasting 25 school
days.
