Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling Program

A Message From the Dean

I am pleased to welcome you to the Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education.

The Human Services Program is the original foundation of our college and grew out of the War on Poverty in the 1960's. Aligned with these historic roots, programs were added. These include a Masters level early education degree and the urban studies program to study the dynamics and issues of life in New York City. Through our work with community professionals, we are constantly expanding and revising our programs to remain relevant in a changing society. Our faculty is composed of scholars and working professionals who provide students with both the knowledge and skills with which to become the most productive and creative members of society.

Your choice to continue your studies in human services, urban studies and public engagement, and education, reflects your commitment to changing your own life, your community's, and even the world. Graduates of our programs have gone on to create new agencies and programs, engage in civic life in their communities and beyond, and work as educators in a variety of settings, from classrooms to alternative programs. All of our degree programs offer opportunities for students to examine themselves as agents of change and to explore different aspects of their fields of study while receiving the skills necessary to create social justice and positive change in the world.

This educational journey focuses on a specific purpose for each semester during which, students demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and skills for each through the development of a constructive action project in a real-world setting. Students identify a problem, collect information to develop strategies for change, implement a plan of action and evaluate the results of their activities. These skills can be applied to almost every work setting and both employers and students have noted that this makes the MCNY educational experience unique preparing students for the challenges they will face as professionals.

Enrolling in an MCNY Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education program begins an amazing academic and professional journey. You will be challenged to explore the world in which you live and beyond while learning the skills to make changes that will help both yourself and others. And, throughout your journey, we will be here to help you succeed.
