A Message from the Program Director

Welcome to MBA Health Services and Risk Management!!!

The healthcare industry in the United States is currently the largest employer and employment in this sector is expected to grow faster (22%) than the average of all occupations for the period between 2010-2020, as the health services industry continues to expand and diversify. The expected growth in jobs by 2018 for medical and health services managers is 19.7 to 26.5% against the 16.7% of managers in the other services. Thus, the employment in the healthcare industry continues to demonstrate consistent and sustained growth and so the demand for health services managers.

Medical and health services managers also called healthcare executives or healthcare administrators, plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services. They may manage an entire facility or specialize in managing a specific managerial area, like healthcare planning, healthcare finance, healthcare human resources management, etc.

Not only does this graduate major combine the best of business knowledge and skills with healthcare management coursework, the curriculum also allows for each student to engage in a Constructive Action project each semester. This unique platform for learning is based on MCNYs Purpose Centered Education model. Each student not only learns classroom theory, but also receives practical, hands-on, experiential knowledge of healthcare industry operations. Each semester the student will associate with an organization that provides healthcare services and will engage in a collaborative project. The Constructive Action class is the true bridge between learning and practice. The three Constructive Action projects comprise strategic healthcare industry analysis, strategic healthcare industry planning, and strategic healthcare industry management.

Graduating with MBA in Health Services and Risk Management not only imparts the business and healthcare management education, but a collaborative experience with health service providers and potential for a high level professional certification and membership in some prestigious professional organizations, like American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and become Board certified in healthcare management. All graduates of this program will have also the knowledge base to sit for the following healthcare management certifications:

  • Certified Associate in Health Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) (
  • Certified Professional in Health Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) (

The entire program requires 45 credits spread over three semesters or 15 credits (5 courses) per semester as a regular student. Thus, the program can be completed in one year as regular student.
